David provides tax advice concerning real estate investment trusts.

He was the National Director of REIT Services in the Washington National Tax practice at KPMG. Prior to that, he served as an assistant branch chief in the IRS’ Office of Chief Counsel, and as the General Counsel for the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts, Inc. in Washington DC.

David has recently assisted in evaluating two tax insurance risks relating to REIT qualification and potential REIT terminations. Because of David’s deep technical expertise, he was able to evaluate one of the risks despite significant deficiencies in the memorandum prepared by the prospective insured. He and the Leo Berwick team moved quickly to craft detailed additional questions and drafted a more complete memorandum to support the underwriting.
